Our 2014 contest has ended, with more than 1,500 photos submitted. Thanks, folks! You can still upload photos to the Celebrate Michigan gallery all year long.
Who isn’t a photographer these days? Even if you don’t carry a serious camera, chances are your smart phone has plenty of photos of family, friends, selfies and vacation shots on it.
So why not put your photo skills to the test and enter The Detroit News’ 8th annual Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest – and maybe win a prize?
We’re looking for photos that show what’s to love about Michigan. Events, places, people, wildlife, activities, scenery — whatever you think makes our state a unique and special place to live. If you’re looking for inspiration, browse through the photo gallery of last year’s finalists.
Each Wednesday beginning next week through Aug. 27, the Detroit News’ staff judges will select four photos to become eligible for prizes to be awarded on Sept. 3. Each week’s finalists will be announced in our newspaper, website, mobile site and app.
The prizes include:
- First place: A two-night stay at the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island.
- Second place: $300.
- Third place: A large, matted and framed print of your photo.
The contest is open to all amateur photographers who are 18 years or older, except employees of The Detroit News, the Detroit Newspaper Partnership and their immediate families.
Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition and artistic merit. Entries must be submitted by the original photographer. Photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared; images that have been digitally altered beyond the basics needed to achieve realistic color balance and sharpness are not eligible for prizes. No watermarks, signatures, dates or copyright notices should be added to the images.
You can submit up to 10 photos per week, each photo no greater than 2 megabytes in file size. Note: You don’t have to resubmit your photos each week; the judges consider all of the entries when picking the weekly finalists. To enter, upload your photos here.
By entering the contest, entrants grant The Detroit News a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display and distribute the entries in any media format. Winners are responsible for any income tax obligations on prizes won.
At detroitnews.com/celebratemichigan you can view all of the entries, comment on them, share them on social media and, as the contest goes on, browse a growing photo gallery of the finalists (seen above), updated weekly.
So, as you enjoy the summer, keep your eyes peeled for a Michigan moment to capture. Give it your best shot!
