Update: This contest is now closed. Thank you for the 1,587 beautiful photos that were submitted this summer! You can still view all of the entries, comment on them, share them on social media and look at the finalists in the gallery above.
Hey, shutterbug. Yes, you, the one who posts pictures of your family and pets on Facebook; the one who subjects your friends and co-workers to 100 photos of your summer vacation; the one who snaps a shot of your restaurant dessert before eating it.
Want to win a prize for your photo skills?
Then enter The Detroit News’ 7th annual Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest. We’re looking for photos that show Michigan at its best – the people, places, animals, events, activities and scenery that make our state unique and a special place to live. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a look at last year’s 55 finalists.
Each Thursday beginning next week through Aug. 15, the Detroit News judges will select five photos to become eligible for prizes awarded at the end of the contest on Aug. 22. Each week’s finalists will be announced in our newspaper, website, mobile site and app.
The prizes include:
- First place: A two-night stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, including two breakfasts and two dinners.
- Second place: A package valued at $250 from the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau that includes an overnight stay in Lansing and a Visa gift card.
- Third place: A $100 gift certificate for golf merchandise at Carl’s Golfland.
Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition and artistic merit. Photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared; images that have been digitally altered beyond standard cropping and toning are not eligible for prizes. However, the judges will consider multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single HDR (High Dynamic Range) image.
Note: You don’t have to resubmit your photos each week; the judges consider all of the entries when picking the weekly finalists.
The contest is open to all amateur photographers, except employees of The Detroit News, the Detroit Newspaper Partnership and their immediate families. The submission limit is 10 images per person per week. Winners are responsible for any income tax obligations on prizes won.
To get started, look about our pleasant peninsula and capture the moment. Then start uploading your best shots of memorable Michigan scenes. Good luck, and enjoy a picturesque summer!
