See the 2012 Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest finalists and grand prize winners

This contest is now closed. Our thanks go to everyone who entered; your photos are beautiful. You are welcome to continue to share your photos here and Celebrate Michigan all year long.

What’s at the heart of Michigan? What photos best represent the character of the people and places that make our state unique? That’s what we’re looking for in The Detroit News’ 6th annual Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest.

Upload your best shots of memorable Michigan scenes for a chance to win one of four prizes. We want to see interesting events, people, animals, activities and scenery that show Michigan and its inhabitants at their best. (For examples, see the photo gallery above of the top entries from last year’s contest. ) The contest is open to all amateur photographers, except employees of The Detroit News, the Detroit Newspaper Partnership and their immediate families.

Each Thursday from June 14 to Aug. 23, the Detroit News judges will select five photos to be in the running for one of four prizes awarded at the end of the contest on Aug. 30. Images will be judged on originality, content, technical excellence, composition and artistic merit. Photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared; images that have been digitally altered beyond standard cropping and toning are not eligible for prizes. However, the judges will consider multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single HDR (High Dynamic Range) image. The limit is 10 images per person per week.

You can view all of the entries, comment on them, and rate them from 1 to 5 stars. (Popular vote will influence the judges.) Some of the photos will be published in the newspaper and all of the finalists will be featured in a photo gallery at
